Does Kilworth House Theatre ever miss when it comes to their summer production? Paired beautifully with their gorgeous woodland setting, this is a summer night out that I always look forward to. Not only is Singin’ in the Rain a joyous and exciting production, but the whole experience is one well worth doing this summer.

Director and choreographer, Lee Proud, has done a phenomenal service to the stage adaptation of one of the greatest and most iconic films ever made. Successfully recreating and incorporating a variety of choreography, vaudeville, jazz, classical and tap. It’s a magical performance which brings the film’s triple threat charm and pizzazz.

Jack Wilcox brings Don Lockwood to life and is instantly likeable and charismatic. The chemistry between he and Kathy Selden (Lucie-Mae Sumner) is beautiful and one that you believe in from the get go. Wilcox brings the title song to life with stunning vocals and iconic dance movements, all whilst getting absolutely soaked! If you’re in the first few rows, you might want to pack a poncho!

Alastair Crosswell as Cosmo Brown had me cracking up, with his performance of ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’ and his trio with Sumner and Wilcox of ‘Good Mornin’ were some of the musical score highlights (along with Wilcox’s Singin’ in the Rain).

Jess Buckby is gratingly irritating and plays a fabulous Lina Lamont. She brings some of the most laughs during the shows, usually unfortunately at her expense as she tries to manoeuvre a new world where movies suddenly have sound and the man she thought loved her beyond PR and screen time falls for another.

With a grating voice like Lamont’s, how can the careers and reputation of the two most loved movie stars be saved now sound is played during the movies? Well, thankfully, Selden has an angelic voice that can save the day. Selden (Sumner) delivers beautiful vocals whilst Lamont (Buckby) lip-syncs leading to some moments of conflict and ultimately a romantic happy ending for Lockwood (Wilcox) and Selden (Sumner).

The charming production will constantly have you smiling and feeling warm inside, complementing perfectly with you cosied up under a blanket with a warm drink under the stars and the fairy lights admiring the most gorgeous and clever set design by Simon Wells. The flow is seamless and the lights and vibrant costumes tie the production together with eloquence and beauty.

Singin’ in the Rain is a phenomenal production and is the perfect summer night out here in Leicestershire’s countryside. Impeccable vibes and a stunning production under the summer sky and warm fairy lights, what more could you need? Ahh a bar? Yes! Don’t forget to check that Swiss style cabin for a post show drink! On until 28 July 2024, this gorgeous production is everything you’ll want from the much-loved classic movie.
