“Hey mama, hey mama look around… everybody’s grooving to a brand new sound!” The infectious energy of Hairspray has hit Curve Leicester this week as the Hairspray brings the vibrant and rhythmic city of Baltimore to life in the heart of Leicester. Is there a feel-good show quite as fabulous as Hairspray? This production certainly sets out to prove that there isn’t, and reminds us why Hairspray is such a juggernaut of a show!
From the moment the curtain rises, you’re pulled into that world of high-energy choreography, and catchy tunes. One of the real joys of the night was watching Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby take on the role of Tracy Turnblad in her professional debut. Growing in confidence as the show went on, her performance was brimming with that signature Tracy charm, particularly in “I Can Hear The Bells.” This was made even more memorable thanks to Solomon Davy’s portrayal of Link Larkin—his puppet-like movements during the scene was such a well choreographed and perfectly delivered scene. True theatre excellence. I felt their chemistry on stage felt authentic and sweet, especially the way Alexandra would full fan girl whilst Solomon would give the look.
Another scene that had the audience in stitches was the duet between Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad and Dermot Canavan as Wilbur Turnblad. Their performance of “Timeless to Me” was packed with comedic timing and tenderness, a real showstopper that had everyone laughing out loud. This was without a doubt the highlight of the night for me. Neil Hurst, in particular, captured that larger-than-life personality that made Edna such a favourite character. His nod to John Travolta’s iconic portrayal was spot on, and yet he made the role entirely his own. Having seen Neil Hurst recently in The Full Monty his range is absolutely incredible. What an actor!
When it comes to power ballads, Michelle Ndegwa stole the spotlight with her stunning rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been.” Her vocals were absolutely incredible, and the raw emotion in her performance made it a truly unforgettable moment. Paired with some background visuals, it was a goosebump-inducing scene.
Penny Pingleton, the quirky and lovable best friend, was brilliantly brought to life by Freya McMahon. For someone making her professional debut, her portrayal was flawless—she captured Penny’s innocence and goofy charm to perfection. My jaw literally hit the floor when I saw it was her debut.
Ending on another high note, it’s worth mentioning that the ensemble cast absolutely nailed every moment, the comedic brilliance of Stuart Hickey and Kirsty Sparks in their authoritative roles, and the beautiful vocals of Grace Anyiam and Vanessa Dumatey. The scene with the three girls—Tracy, Amber, and Penny—alongside their mothers was also a particular high.
This production of Hairspray is truly a feel-good extravaganza, and the casting has been spot-on. With just a few days left before it wraps up at Curve, Leicester, I highly recommend grabbing tickets while you can.
Hairspray is running at Curve Leicester until September 28th—don’t miss your chance to catch it!
