Nothing short of genius
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I could end the review right here and say it’s the best new show I’ve watched in a very long time. But & Juliet deserves more than just a single line of praise—it’s a joyous piece of theatre with storytelling that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
This is the kind of show that reminds you why you fell in love with theatre in the first place. It’s bold, energetic, and a non-stop party with some absolute belters. The storyline is instantly engaging, running two narratives simultaneously: Shakespeare (Jay McGuiness) and his wife, Anne Hathaway (Lara Denning), debating the fate of Juliet, and the rewritten story of Juliet herself, reimagined as a woman taking control of her own destiny. The way these two threads intertwine is nothing short of genius, adding humour and genuine heartfelt emotion.
The entire cast is, in a word, phenomenal.
Jay McGuiness (best known for The Wanted) and Lara Denning share brilliant chemistry, their scenes bursting with Shakespeare wit and charm, and it would be criminal to not mention Denning’s solo “That’s The Way It Is”. This is an undeniable standout moment in the show, her vocals had my hairs on edge, and roars of applause followed. I also loved McGuiness and Denning’s duet “I Want It That Way” which was excellently delivered.
Lee Latchford-Evans (best know for Steps) delivers a comical performance – with a cracking accent, while Sandra Marvin, once my favourite in Sister Act, proves once again that she is a powerhouse and is born to play a role like Nurse Angeliqué. The entire cast elevates this production, ensuring that every moment, from the biggest numbers to the smallest exchanges, is polished and superb.
Speaking of big numbers, & Juliet is a dream for lovers of late ‘90s and early 2000s pop. The musical score is packed with hits from Max Martin, but unlike some jukebox musicals that often slot in familiar songs for nostalgia sake, every track here serves purpose. The lyrics take on new meaning, sometimes shifting your entire perspective on a song you thought you knew – with Love Me Like You Do, and I Want It That Way being the best examples of this. It’s testament to the clever plot writing that these songs don’t feel forced but instead enhance and drive the story.
It’s rare to find a show that ticks every box for me, but & Juliet does just that. It’s heartfelt, hilarious, and musically brilliant. The production makes full use of its budget, with some beautiful aerial performances, vibrant choreography, and enough sparkle to fill the theatre floor.
Whether you’re a fan of pop music, classic theatre, or just looking for a great night out, this is 100% worth watching. You’ll leave the theatre feeling entertained, and, most importantly, reminded of just how brilliant live theatre can be.
