Save Money by Booking your Flights with Skyscanner
Booking a holiday or a trip can be a nightmare. Where to go? Who to book with? When to go?
What if there was a way to know exactly when and where to go, all at the click of a button? Cue Skyscanner.
I started using Skyscanner a couple of years ago now and it has saved me so much time and money.
What Is Skyscanner?
Skyscanner is simply a price comparison site, similar to how you might use go compare for insurance. Why pay more, when you can pay less? Paying less = more trips, right?
On Skyscanner, you can research and find the best prices for flights, hotels and even car hire. The website pulls real-time data of all the flight, hotel and car deals to find you the best price. Saving you money and time.
Why Should I Use It?
Now, with Skyscanner, you need the option to be fairly flexible, if you’re wanting to save money. Plus, if you’re looking for a package holiday, this probably isn’t the site for you.
However, if you’re looking for a weekend away or you’re not too sure where you want to head to yet, Skyscanner is perfect for settling that mini-debate in your head.
Skyscanner is the reason we have ended up in Lisbon, Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Budapest. They were the cheapest places that we were interested in going for the dates we were planning to go away.
How Do I Use It?
Skyscanner is so easy to navigate and use. It’s a clean, finished website. One that isn’t going to cause too much confusion.
You start with the home screen on Skyscanner.co.uk where you will find this screen.
Start by adding where you will fly from, I usually start with my local airport, East Midlands, or if I’m feeling adventurous, I search “From United Kingdom”. Sometimes, it’s cheaper to drive to Luton or Manchester and paying parking and petrol than travelling from the closest airport.
Now, for the fun part.
If I have somewhere specific in mind, which is not very often, I type that in the To box. However, I love that on Skyscanner, you can search “Everywhere”.
“Everywhere” is that little bit of inspiration you need when you’re unsure of where to go. Perhaps you’re looking for somewhere cheap? Perhaps you just want to go somewhere and aren’t sure where. “Everywhere” solves that dilemma! Plus, I am trying to go “Everywhere”.
Next, it’s time to add your dates! Or not! This is the beauty of Skyscanner, there is so much flexibility.
If you have specific dates in mind, like we usually did working in a school, then Skyscanner can shift and find the best deals for your dates. However, if you have the freedom to travel whenever, you can either search for the cheapest deal for that month. Or, the cheapest month of the year! Talk about bargain hunting!
*cue me searching for the cheapest flight for everywhere and wanting to book one*
From a simple search, Skyscanner instantly pulls all of the offers that are available for August 2018!
*This is where I have to resist temptation*
So, with the search, from East Midlands in August 2018, I can get a return flight to 6 different countries for less than £100 return! *keep strong, Lauren* (If you do travel from East Midlands, I definitely recommend checking this blog post out too!)
Germany has always been sitting near the top of my wanting to go list, So, I’ll use that one for research purposes.
Once you have decided on your country or the country you want to know more about before you decide, you can click to see which cities you can get to.
There is a direct flight heading to Berlin for around £63. Return. I’m strong. I’m strong. I don’t need to book this right now.
To find out when to travel, click the green button to take yourself to the calendar page. This will help you to establish when exactly you should go.
From the dates I have clicked, it would show as £92, purely so you can see the price of the entire month. I don’t think anybody would be spending more than a few days in Berlin, right?
For a couple of nights away, you can pick a return flight up, Wednesday to Friday for £79. Definitely not bad at all!
Another handy little feature is the graph. You can see exactly when the cheapest days are to fly. Why pay more, when all you need to do is travel on a Wednesday as opposed to a Saturday or a Tuesday?
The next screen brings you to the flight options. You can choose whether to fly the cheapest, the quickest or the best option. Usually, the cheapest and the quickest are the same, meaning the best is a combination of the two.
From the search, I can see my best option is to fly with Ryanair. I can alter my times if I’d rather take off later, or earlier, and I can eliminate the stops (if I’d rather just see direct flight options).
Not Too Sure About Booking Yet? Sign Up for Notifications!
One of my favourite features about Skyscanner is the notification option.
When you click “Get Price Alerts” Skyscanner will send you email notifications when the flight increases or decreases. I tend to do this to keep an eye on the flight price pattern.
I have so many flight notifications on so when they drop I can go ahead and book. Knowing I’ve got the best price!
Do I Pay Skyscanner?
No! Skyscanner is 100% free. It is a search engine, similar to Google. Once you have chosen your flight and ready to pay, you are redirected to the flight operators website, in my example, it’s Ryanair.
All of the bookings are done directly through the flight operator, so it’s 100% legit, 100% safe and 100% money saving.
“We’re free
And unbiased. Over 50 million travellers around the world trust us each month to help them find the best flights, hotels and car hire.”
I absolutely swear by Skyscanner and so do 50 million other travellers each month. It has been the best place for me to find trips and has allowed us to visit these places I only ever dreamt of before. All of the flights were £100 or less!
Maybe you’ll be visiting Benidorm or further afield quicker than you thought, now you have access to some of the best flight deals around!
Have you used Skyscanner before? Did it save you money?
Where did you go? I’d love to hear about it!
Hasta luego,
