Wednesday 10th October 2018 – Day 10 of Blogtober

Oktoberfest in Benidorm this year is a lot longer than previous years. This Oktoberfest, 2018, started on Thursday 4th October and will come to a close on Sunday 14th October, which conveniently is at the same time as the Spanish National Bank Holiday weekend.

We intended to head down on Tuesday 9th October, also conveniently a bank holiday día de comunidad valenciana, to check out and see what it was all about and if it’s worth a visit.

However, the best-laid plans never go right – do they? Instead, Alex and I spent all day battling with the lurgy, no leaving the bed let alone the apartment.

I have made you a little guide about where it is and what it’s all about in case you wanted to check it out.

In the square, adjacent to the town hall you’ll find a huge tent filled with German beers and food. Aromas of Frankfurter sausage sizzling on the grill and Paulaner beer will fill the air.

Now, we’re not ones for drinking beer, in fact, if it’s not wine, good wine, then I probably don’t want to know. But, when in Rome, as they say. If we were there, we’d have given the beer a try – make sure you do!

Of course, no Oktoberfest is complete without a bit of Bavarian folk and polka music, yes, I totally had to Google what it was called. In a nutshell, the Bavaria state is the southeast of Germany that borders Liechtenstein, Austria and the Czech Republic. Its capital state, Munich, is known for the annual Oktoberfest beer festival. Bavarian music, outside of Germany, is recognised for its yodelling and the Schuhplattler dancers, the stereotypical shorts and dungarees style clothes that are now only found today to please the tourists.

Every day, there are live performances, entertainment and a variety of contests.

The event is free to attend, only paying for what you eat or drink.

If you’re looking for something different to do whilst you’re in Benidorm in October, the Oktoberfest is supposed to be well-worth checking out. It’s supposed to be a great atmosphere to enjoy with friends and family and a good excuse to eat your way through the food stalls, good excuse for hot dogs too!

The Oktoberfest will finish on October 14th 2018, so make sure you head down before it’s gone.
