Sister Act at Curve, Leicester (2024) Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A joyous production from start to finish

Sister Act proves time and time again why it’s such a popular production, one sent from above to lift your heart, your spirits and have you laughing from start to finish.

If you’ve never watched Sister Act before, it’s based on Deloris Van Cartier, the rebellious spirit who dreams of being a star and giving her voice the spotlight – until she witnesses her married boyfriend murder someone and then things get, shall we say… complicated?

Where do you put someone who was born to stand-out? Somewhere to blend in? Ahh, of course… a nunnery.

In this run of Sister Act, Deloris Van Cartier is played by Landi Oshinowo, and I adored her. From the moment she stepped on stage, she was Deloris. Funny. Sarcastic. A belter of a voice. And… those facial expressions are top tier, bar nun! She was everything you expect from a Deloris, and more. Completely and utterly Fabulous, Baby!

Taking on the iconic role of Mother Superior was Lori Haley Fox who, in particular, brought an excellent energy fuelled with burden and stickler for fuels, yet still a glimpse of hope of shimmering softness throughout. Her relationship with Deloris, despite being a complex one, still showed a sense of a caring nature – intertwined perfectly imperfectly with resentment and anguish.

I felt in this performance of Sister Act, the chemistry was wonderful on stage between the nuns, and Deloris and Mother Superior. It just felt… right.

The soundtrack for Sister Act is absolutely fabulous, and you’ll be swaying, clapping and smiling along as the cast perform numbers such as “Take Me To Heaven”, “Fabulous, Baby”, and “Raise Your Voice”. One of my favourites, “The Life I Never Led” was an exceptional performance for Sister Mary Robert by Eloise Runnette, who showed a beautiful character growth in confidence and the true meaning of sisterhood.

A special mention to Alfie Parker who undertakes the role of Eddie, or Steady Eddie. I really enjoyed his performance and chemistry for Deloris. I found him particularly charismatic and despite Eddie not being a character on stage with Deloris often, I found their bond genuine and believable. Of course, the audiences love the on-stage costume change for Eddie, so we were, as always, buzzing by this!

I thoroughly enjoyed this production of Sister Act, and could watch it over and over again!
